How to get a good picture with a digital camera?

Hey. I started using my digital camera mom (a Olympus D-580 Zoom). Attempt real candid shots of my jewelry, and it is difficult to obtain clear images. I know you take half of the plate to the point of the camera and helps .. but images not perfect but as I am. Any suggestions for different parameters set my camera?
